Visa Details
A visa is required for Indian passport holders to enter New Zealand. The visa must be obtained before traveling. It's worth noting that holders of an Australian Permanent Resident Visa or Resident Return Visa may be granted a New Zealand Resident Visa on arrival, permitting indefinite stay (pursuant to the Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement), subject to meeting character requirements and obtaining an Electronic Travel Authority prior to departure.
Transit Through New Zealand
Transit visa normally required — check exceptions. Check the airport, documents and connection conditions below before booking.
Must stay in the airport transit area.
- •Must stay in transit area of Auckland International Airport
- •Passport valid for at least 3 months after departure date
- •Valid onward ticket
- •Approved Transit Visa, an eligible approved NZeTA, a valid New Zealand visa, or another applicable exemption; this is not unconditional visa-free transit
Transit visa exemptions:
Indian passport holders normally need a Transit Visa unless they already hold a valid New Zealand visa or another exemption applies. Eligible transit to or from Australia can use an approved NZeTA instead; travel to Australia also requires a valid Australian visa. Australian permanent residents can qualify for an NZeTA. Visa-waiver nationality exemptions depend on the passport, not the country of departure. Character requirements still apply.
Ordinary Indian passport holders generally need a Transit Visa for an Auckland international connection unless an eligible NZeTA route, existing valid New Zealand visa or other exemption applies. The visa page permits up to 24 hours airside, while the general explainer says less than 24 hours: avoid a connection at that boundary. Leaving the transit area or using another New Zealand airport requires appropriate entry permission. Apply before travel.
