Visa Details

Indian passport holders need a visa to enter South Africa. The Department of Home Affairs has launched a new digital Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system at eta.dha.gov.za. Phase 1 went live in October 2025 for G20 delegates; Phase 2 (since November 2025) extends the ETA requirement to all ordinary passport holders from China, India, Indonesia and Mexico arriving via O.R. Tambo International (Johannesburg) and Cape Town International airports for short tourist or visitor stays (up to 90 days, with another 90 days possible by extension). Approvals are being issued with one-year multiple-entry validity, processed largely automatically using AI risk assessment. The older eVisa system (ehome.dha.gov.za) and consular visa applications also remain available, particularly for entry through other ports or for those not yet covered by the ETA. For transit: no visa needed if staying airside, and transit visas are FREE for Indians if required.

Good news: Indian nationals are EXEMPT from paying South Africa Transit Visa fees (visa is FREE). No transit visa needed if staying airside at Cape Town (CPT), Durban (DUR), Johannesburg (JNB), or Lanseria (HLA) airports. If leaving airport or using land ports, a port of entry visa may be required.
