• Passport issued within the past 10 years, with at least 2 blank pages and validity at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from Schengen
• For Delhi applications, confirm passport validity with the mission: VFS also asks for 6 months from travel, while the Embassy and its checklist state 3 months beyond the stay
• Travel medical insurance of at least €30,000 covering emergency care, hospitalisation and repatriation, valid throughout Schengen for your stay; for a multiple-entry application, show cover for the first visit and maintain cover on later trips
• Accommodation evidence and an itinerary including return travel
• Proof of sufficient funds for your stay and return, using Italy’s official means-of-support table and your consulate’s evidence requirements

Step-by-Step Application Process

   Apply through Italy when it is your sole or main Schengen destination by duration or purpose; if there is no main destination, apply through the country of first Schengen entry

   Choose the Italian mission responsible for your legal residence and follow its tourist checklist and appointment instructions; VFS accepts applications for the Italian missions in India

   Complete and sign the application form, then assemble the documents required by your consular jurisdiction

   Attend as instructed and provide biometrics when required; fingerprints taken less than 59 months earlier can normally be reused, subject to exceptions

   Pay the applicable visa fee and, if using VFS, its separate service charge; the consulate makes the decision

   When your passport is returned, check your personal details, visa validity, permitted stay and number of entries

• Travel medical insurance meeting the Schengen coverage and duration rules
• Cover letter, travel itinerary, return reservation and accommodation evidence
• Financial and employment, business or study evidence relevant to your circumstances; follow your mission’s exact checklist
• Delhi’s tourist checklist specifies 1 photo and 6 months of personal bank statements; Mumbai’s specifies 2 photos and 3 months of salary bank statements. Follow the listed tax-document requirements for your circumstances
• Delhi’s current financial checklist also lists 3 years of tax returns with barcode and tax challan receipts; check the sponsor alternative and your applicant category
• For minors, check the mission’s birth-certificate, parental-signature and consent requirements; extra documents or an interview may be requested
