- Proof of legal residence and social or economic ties in the country where you apply
Step-by-Step Application Process

Check that the Netherlands is responsible: main purpose first; for the same purpose, longest stay, then first destination if stays are equal

Use the Dutch government online form; print and sign your own uniquely coded application

Collect the India tourism checklist documents and book VFS Global directly; separate appointments are required for each traveller

Attend in person with your passport and checklist, including children; provide fingerprints unless exempt

Pay the applicable visa and VFS service charges, then use your reference number to track the application

After the decision, collect your passport or arrange delivery; check the visa details if approved
Documents Required
- Signed application and passport; colour copies of the identity page, Indian passport last page and any previous Schengen entry/exit stamps
- Digital photo is taken at VFS; the official checklist does not require submitting printed photos when using an external service provider
- Legal-residence evidence; employment and leave documents with 3 months of payslips if employed, or the checklist’s evidence for your own status
- Financial evidence: 3 months of bank-stamped and signed personal statements or Indian income-tax returns for the last 2 tax years, as the tourism checklist specifies
- Accommodation for the whole itinerary, travel reservation and plans, cover letter, and qualifying medical-insurance evidence
- For minors travelling alone or with one parent/guardian, follow the additional birth, consent, identity and custody-document requirements on the official checklist
Pro Tips
- Use reservations rather than buying a flight ticket solely for the application
- If visiting several Schengen countries, choose the competent country by the main purpose of the trip; do not switch countries just to get an earlier appointment
- Keep proof of valid insurance for every subsequent trip on a multiple-entry visa
- If using Dutch sponsorship, use the official form and required income evidence; visa applicants need the sponsor’s signature legalised by a Dutch municipality
Important Notes
- • VFS applications in India serve residents of India, Afghanistan and Bhutan; other residents must check whether applying in India is permitted
- • Fingerprint exemptions include children under 12, medical inability, and prints taken for a Schengen or entry-visa application within the previous 59 months; attendance is still required
- • Children under 6 are exempt from the visa fee, but VFS service charges still apply
- • The current Dutch processing notice gives a 25-calendar-day average and possible extension to 45 days; passport delivery takes additional time
