Key Requirements

• Passport issued within 10 years, with two blank pages. The tourist checklist requires validity three months after final Schengen departure; Embassy web guidance instead says after visa expiry. Confirm this discrepancy before applying.
• Travel medical insurance of at least €30,000 across Schengen, including medical repatriation, for the intended stay. Multiple-entry applications need first-trip cover and acknowledgment of insurance for later trips.
• Accommodation, travel reservations and evidence of sufficient funds and intention to return; the Embassy assesses individual circumstances.

Step-by-Step Application Process

   Apply through Austria when it is your sole or main destination by length or purpose of stay; if none is identifiable, apply through the first Schengen entry country.

   Apply where you legally reside. For Indian residents, book the Austrian VFS appointment and prepare the Embassy’s current tourist checklist.

   Complete and sign the form, submit the supporting documents and pay the applicable visa and service fees. VFS receives applications; the Embassy decides them.

   Attend for biometrics when required. Stored Schengen fingerprints can generally be reused within 59 months; children under 12 are exempt from fingerprints.

   The Embassy may request more documents or an interview. Follow VFS instructions for passport return.

Documents Required

• Signed application in English or German; passport and copies of its data, last, visa and travel pages; previous Schengen visas and entry/exit stamps or proof of loss.
• One ICAO-compliant photograph; check the passport-validity discrepancy described above.
• Cover letter with purpose, dates, companions, transport and accommodation; round-trip reservations, onward transport evidence and accommodation proof.
• Schengen medical insurance meeting the conditions above.
• Original bank statements for three months and/or other available funds; barcode ITRs for the last two years.
• Employees: three months’ salary certificates, employment contract, leave NOC and official work or HR email. Self-employed: relevant business registration.
• Retirees: three months’ pension statements and/or regular property/business income. Students: enrollment or registration evidence.
• Minors with one parent: original notarized consent from the other parent; travelling alone: both parents’ or guardians’ consent. Include parents’ passport/ID copies.
